People always ask me, this time of year, whether a fresh cut Christmas tree can be made fire proof. The short answer is No. When I lived in Illinois, different Fire Departments would test out the various manufactures’ claims. All the test trees went up in smoke, and quickly at that. The only way to have a safe Christmas tree is to watch it carefully. An evergreen tree is basically a solid stick of turpentine.

When I grew up in Chicago, we always put our tree up the day before Christmas, and maybe it will last the twelve days. Other folks try to make that same tree last three or four weeks. I would advise to try that with a fake, ok artificial tree only.

In the nine years I sold Christmas trees in Illinois, I must have sold over 35,000 trees. Everyone is looking for the “Perfect” tree. Whole families would travel from four to five tree lots looking for that perfect tree. In my opinion, there are no perfect trees, except for those artificial trees; we all know how unreal those look. So, if you want to cut that holiday stress don’t worry about how the tree looks. For once, pick a crooked tree, a tree with a hole in it, or a tree that says “Charlie Brown.” These trees have greater possibilities to be beautiful this year, because aren’t we all imperfect?

From reliable sources the first Christmas, I hear, was not a perfectly planned event. No reservations were made to secure a room for the night, and no one on staffs for medical care. A stable is considered only one step better than sleeping outside. Mary and Joseph knew no one in town, but in time…God’s good time, everything came to be. Be patience, don’t worry, speak kindly, find the good in all, and pray always for better days to come for all.

Instructions to get the most from your tree

1. Find suitable tree

2. Pound trunk into ground of selected tree to check needle drop.

3. Transport tree from inside the car not on the outside of it, car speeds will dry the tree.

4. Store tree out of the sun and wind.

5. Before bringing into house cut off about an inch or two off the bottom

6. Wash tree stand very well, drinkable clean, bacterium not washed away will clog up water tree spores.

7. Secure tree with guy wires way above anyone heads, to prevent children and pets from knocking over tree.

8. Check for water usage every day; add water everyday, if tree stop taking up water the tree should be taken out.

9. If branches break when bent, its time to remove tree.

10. Outdoors the tree can be cut down to be used as mulch.
